Rufus Frowde

Whilst Organ Scholar of Merton College, Oxford, Rufus sang with ‘Schola Cantorum of Oxford’, co-led the Oxford University Orchestra and was elected conductor of the Oxford University Philharmonia. He became Organ Scholar of Worcester Cathedral, obtaining the Associateship and Choir Directing Diplomas of the Royal College of Organists (being awarded the John Brook Memorial Prize). He then became Organist, Assistant Director of Music and an Assistant Housemaster at Pangbourne College, Berkshire. This was followed by a temporary appointment as Acting Director of Music at Northwood College. Rufus combined this with his current appointment as Organist and Assistant Director of Music at the Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace. In this capacity he has recently played for the Queen and Prince Philip as well as accompanying Kiri te Kanawa and José Carreras.

In September 2003, Rufus started postgraduate study in Church Music and Choral Direction (Royal Academy of Music). He combines this with freelance work as a conductor, organist, accompanist and teacher. He has recently collaborated with the composer, James Cook, directing ‘Voces Oxonienses’ for a CD on the Divine Art label. As well as being Musical Director at Yateley, he is also the Assistant Conductor and Accompanist for Islington Choral Society and he has recently formed PAEAN, an ensemble of young professional singers and instrumentalists. Rufus also directs Surrey Youth Choir.

Recent performances have included the cathedrals of Bristol, Hereford, Chelmsford, Southwark (Anglican and Roman Catholic) and Winchester, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, Royal Holloway College (University of London), Kingston Parish Church, Huddersfield University, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, as well as La Madeleine (Paris).

Rufus also continues to perform as a violinist and is a member of the Dacorum String Quartet. On the lighter side, he recently performed with American singer/song-writer, Gene Pitney, on a UK tour.
